The Okorie/Arogundade Saga

The recent indecent assault and battery experienced by Miss. Okorie in the hands of Rear Admiral Arogundade's men has raised the question as to the effectiveness of the much acclaimed rule of law under President Yar' Adua's government. But beyond that, who should prosecute an action in court over it, the state or the individual? Admitted there is a civil angle to it. Which of criminal angle and civil angle is expediment at this time? Please make your contribution.

It is either the Federal Attorney General has not acquainted Mr President with the meaning and practical essence of the concept of Rule of Law,or there is a collective morbid ignorance of the concept in government quarters!!

This administration has no regards for Rule of Law otherwise the Judge who presided over the election petition at the court of appeal would not have been promoted to supreme Court on the eve of the VERDIT!!

Anyway,on the Okorie Saga, the Officers who assaulted Okorie should be prosecuted by the State on criminal charges as a prelude to

in-house courtmartial leading to dismissal from the Force. This sequence should be given priority

over civil litigation(though both can run pari passu in Law)because the wrong committed was essen

tially against public conscience and sensibilities

Having stated that,it should be noted that state

prosecution of the Culprits would not justify an applause for Government as a Rule of Law adherent or enforcer, much as NO government will be commended for observing Rule of Law because a Civilian disturbing the public peace or an armed robber has been prosecuted by government.

lt is only a government that enforces court orders against its interests or which refrains from taking unconstitutional measures againt its perceived antagonists that can claim credits for

upholding the Rule of Law.

In the face of the overwhelming evidence available in this case the over zealous Naval personnel should be made to face the full wrath of the Law.
