Amendment of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria: Matters Arising for the Nation's Development

The major problems encountered today in the governance of the nation can be traced to a number of inadequacies in the Constitution which is more or less the national contract that binds together the different peoples that make up the country. Issues ranging from resource control, the Niger-Delta episodes, the quota system, creation of local councils, revenue sharing formula, state police, true federalism, presidential system or parliamentary sysytem, etc are but few of the aspects that require urgent consideration. Your say may be a good contribution for wholesome development of this nation with great potential.

When a problem is very complex and hydra-headed oftentimes the solution may be very very simple if sincerity is not abhorred and excluded.

The very statement of the problem by you in defining Constitution as a National Contract reveals that simple solution:do we truly have a national contract??

Of course,we haven't.What we have always had is an imposition. So the simple solution is for us to

create a forum where true Representatives of the

people can come together to fashion an acceptable

and suitable Constitution for the nation.

Thereafter,the Representatives' "manual" will be

subjected to final approval through a transparent

referendum.

That way every segment and interest in society will feel a sense of belonging and assume

a stake in due observance of the Constitution.

user Ademola Onitiju  - The issue of constitutional amendment in Nige... ...posted on 6th Nov, 2008

The issue of constitutional amendment in Nigeria goes beyond mere document re-issueance.The problem is more endemic.Dialogue devoid of politicking is required. Nigerians have never sat down as a people to negotiate their federation. Until this is done, no meaningful amendment can be made. Issues of equality of all persons , tribe and ethnic groupings should be addressed.Verifiable electoral constituency boundaries drawn up such that the present defective lopsided nature could be redressed. A situation where a bloated/bogus part of the country can hamstring ,frustrate and arrogantly ride the rest over topical issues in debate needs to be made a thing of the past. The best of Nigerians should represent their country in all human endeavour on the international scene irrespective of tribe ,religion or ethnic grouping. Merit first and foremost. Imposition of federal character negates this as it encourages mediocrity.Let there be dialogue and constitutional conference to aggregate all shades of opinion.
